This is NOT Mundane

Gabriela pointed out after my last blog entry that it made our trip sound somewhat mundane and not that exciting.  The routine days, escaping to the movies, the long hours riding.  She has a point, I do not want to mislead you.

So let me be explicitly clear.  This trip is NOT mundane.  It is magic.  Among other things we have:

- Fed a kangaroo with a baby in her pouch.
- Maneuvered our bikes around a herd of bison.
- Camped in a field lit up by fireflies.
- Been invited freely into the homes of amazing people.
- Received a steam-bath from the immense caldera of a hot-spring.
- Had a snowball fight.
- Had a water balloon fight.
- Coasted down a mountain at 42 mph (again, on a bicycle).
- Eaten more food in day that many people have in a week (ok, that’s just me).
- Taken a ride on a camel.
- Slept in a fire department and heard the calls over the loudspeakers.
- Cycled along 10 foot walls of snow, in the snow, and across the snow.
- Seen a baby fox.
- Played with a baby camel.
- Been carried along (at 24mph) by a thunderstorm.
- Watched dozens of sunsets.
- Been kissed by a giraffe.
- Slept in a church. Or 9.
- Learned to set up a tent in 45 seconds flat.
- Seen a baby bear.
- Been woken up by lawn sprinklers (all aimed directly at our tent).
- Had chocolate OR ice cream OR both.  EVERY DAY.
- Watched a blizzard, a hailstorm, a windstorm, a duststorm, a thunderstorm, and a meteor shower.

So let me be explicitly clear.  This trip is NOT mundane.  It is magic.

  1. Cesitar!  There’s no doubt that your trip is magical and (to stand up for you a little bit) I don’t think your posts are mundane at all.  In fact, it is some of the everyday details you share that I find the most interesting.  You reminded me of how cheap movies are in the middle of the country (where I went to high school), you scared the crap out of us by talking about riding in a thunderstorm, and you made us feel like you aren’t too far away by talking about watching game 3 of the NBA Finals!

Anyways, you guys are awesome not only for tackling this challenge, but for working so hard to share it with all of us.  I’ve received every one of your messages, and I’m especially fond of the beautiful landscape of Kansas that was image on your most recent missive.  (nice drawing of the two little bicycles too, by the way!)

On my part, I spent the July 4th weekend in the Santa Ynez valley with Mariana and her friend—biking to 7 wineries spread out among 4 villages.  It was a great time… you can check out our pics here:  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=44386&l=3054c&id=633571484

Take care, and know that I’m always waiting for the next post!  I’ll miss you guys for my bday, but have a good time with Rosio for hers!

  2. John!  Thanks for the update, and that’s a cool cycling trip around the wineries that you guys took.  Fun stuff.  and happy upcoming birthday!!
